The Autódromo Jorge Ángel Pena near Mendoza has evolved steadily over the decades since it opened in 1978.
Originally a 1.6 kilometre sprint, the circuit underwent its first major extension for the 1994 season when a new 1 km loop was added between the original Turn 1 and 2. The final corners of the lap were also straightened to speed up the circuit.
TC2000 first visited in 1995, but didn’t return, and so for 2006 another extension was constructed – with motivation also coming from the demise of the local General San Martín circuit in 1997. This created a new back straight after a reprofiled Turn 2, a new hairpin, and straightened out some of the old infield to allow for higher speeds on the circuit.
The most recent change came in 2011, when the track was extended to its current length of 4.167 km by moving the final corner back, extending the main straight and introducing a new chicane prior to the sweeping final bend. The changes succeeded in attracting Turismo Carretera for the first time.
Súper TC2000 visited on five occasions after this, but in recent seasons it has again stayed away from the circuit.
