Adam Shepherd doubles up at Oulton Park

Capture Motorsport’s Adam Shepherd claimed a double victory in the TCR UK races at Oulton Park, benefitting when race two winner on the road Steve Laidlaw was given a time penalty.

Race One

In the opening race, Shepherd made a good start to quickly assume a comfortable lead, but behind the leading CUPRA Steve Laidlaw stalled his own Leon on the grid, dropping from a plum third to the very back of the field.

In the process, that delayed JH Racing’s Callum Newsham, who started directly behind and dropped behind Finn Leslie, although Newsham reclaimed fourth halfway around the lap when he dived inside his fellow Hyundai racer into the chicane.

The race quickly settled down, before a safety car intervention was required on lap six after Harry Bloor crashed his Hyundai into the barriers at the exit of the Knickerbrook chicane.

After three laps, the action resumed with Shepherd quickly pulling clear, but the battle for second heated up, as Sam Laidlaw ran wide at the first corner.

That allowed an opportunistic Bradley Hutchison to dive inside for second, before Newsham opened the door for third into the hairpin to take the final podium place.

Neither could challenge the dominant Shepherd, though, who won the race by over three seconds from Hutchison and Newsham, despite there being only four laps of racing after the safety car.

Sam Laidlaw managed to hold fourth to the chequered flag, finishing ahead of Leslie in fifth.

Race Two

In race two, Mark Smith started from the reverse-grid pole position with Rod McGovern alongside, whilst race one winner Shepherd lined up in tenth.

At the start, it was Steve Laidlaw who made the biggest moves away from the line, muscling between Will Beech and Gregory Saunders to move into second before the first corner.

Steve Laidlaw then tried to claim the race lead into the Island hairpin, but McGovern defended the inside and held the lead.

However, Laidlaw was determined and eventually dived inside into Lodge Corner at the end of the lap to claim the lead.

By the end of the opening lap, Newsham had also worked his way into third, whilst Hutchison was fifth, behind Leslie.

McGovern made a mistake into the first corner on the second lap and dropped two places, falling behind Hutchison into fifth over hilltop before the two made contact and rubbed several times over the ensuing half a lap, allowing Shepherd to gain ground and move into fifth as well.

Shepherd swiftly passed Hutchison for fourth a few corners later, although Hutchison fought back and tried to reclaim the place to no avail.

By this stage, the leading trio were running clear of Shepherd in fourth, but by the end of lap five, with Newsham pressuring Steve Laidlaw for the lead and Leslie in close company, Shepherd had caught the trio.

Shepherd dived inside Leslie for third at the start of the seventh lap, then closed in on the battle between Newsham and Laidlaw for the lead.

On lap nine Steve Laidlaw cut the chicane under pressure from the duo behind but continued in the lead, whilst Shepherd overtook Newsham for second into Old Hall corner on the next lap.

On the penultimate lap, Steve Laidlaw was then handed a five second time penalty for exceeding track limits, and as the message got to Shepherd he backed off, ultimately inheriting the win after the chequered flag.

Newsham was thus second, with Hutchison completing the podium as Steve Laidlaw fell to fourth despite leading the entire race.

Leslie was fifth, whilst Sam Laidlaw took sixth in the second of the Area Motorsport CUPRAs.

A double win for Shepherd sees him move to the top of the championship standings with 435 points, ahead of Newsham (395) and Sam Laidlaw (352).
