Late charge gives Jack Goff the top time on day one at Snetterton

Jack Goff produced a late effort to topple Jake Hill and top the timesheets on the opening day of the Dunlop tyre test at Snetterton.

The Eurotech Racing driver clocked a 1:57.408 on the final of his 34 afternoon laps in the Honda Civic Type-R to eclipse Hill’s Volkswagen CC by 0.012 seconds.

Goff completed the most laps of any driver in the combined session classification, with 92 laps of the Norfolk circuit under his belt.

Ollie Jackson claimed third in the Audi S3 ahead of the Mercedes A-Class pairing of Aiden Moffat and Adam Morgan.

Tom Ingram went fastest of the direct championship contenders in sixth, with Mat Jackson seventh.

Brett Smith took eighth on his first mileage in the British Touring Car Championship for Eurotech after being announced as the replacement for father Jeff, who continues his recovery after a heavy crash during qualifying at Croft.

Will Burns ratified Team HARD’s pace in ninth, with Jason Plato tenth as the quickest of Team BMR’s Subaru Levorg quartet.

Tom Chilton led the charge for Vauxhall in 14th, with Andrew Jordan and Josh Cook fastest for BMW and MG in 17th and 19th respectively.

Matt Neal was 16th as the only works Honda runner, nearly 1.5 seconds adrift.

With the test commonly used for setup innovations and testing of Dunlop’s current and 2018 compounds, the timesheets are likely to only partially reflect the running order when the championship races at the 2.99 mile Norfolk circuit later this month.

The 27-strong field will tackle the circuit during the second day of testing tomorrow.
