René Rast steals last-gasp maiden pole for Hungaroring race one

Team Rosberg’s René Rast took his maiden DTM career pole position at the Hungaroring in the dying seconds of qualifying for race one this morning, putting him on the front row of the grid for the second time this season.

The German, who qualified second for the second race at the season opener, pipped second practice pace setter Jamie Green by 0.076 seconds, with the pair taking three and two points for their respective efforts.

Team Abt Sportsline’s Mattias Ekström completed the top three, followed closely by Nico Müller and Mike Rockenfeller, who rounded out the top five for Dieter Gass’ ranks. All five drivers were separated by 0.502 seconds.

Team RMG’s Augusto Farfus was the fastest of the BMW contingent in sixth place, just 0.031 seconds off the top five, whilst Loïc Duval was the slowest of the Audi Sport drivers in seventh, putting all RS5 DTMs into the top ten.

Lucas Auer and Gary Paffett were leading the Mercedes-AMG DTM ranks, as the pair were eighth and ninth after the 20-minute session, faster than the BMW of Tom Blomqvist.

Robert Wickens was in the fight for pole position early on along with Auer, but the Canadian was 11th fastest, 0.764 seconds off Rast.

It was also another difficult session for BMW, with Maxime Martin, Timo Glock, Marco Wittmann and Bruno Spengler ending up 12th, 14th, 15th and 17th fastest around the 4.381-km circuit.

Paul Di Resta was 13th fastest, with both Edoardo Mortara and Maro Engel finding themselves right at the back of the grid for this afternoon’s race in 16th and last.

Race one of the weekend, lasting for 55 minutes plus one lap, including a mandatory pitstop, starts at 1448 local time.
