Miguel Molina fastest in Nürburgring second free practice

Audi Sport’s Miguel Molina took top honours in the second free practice session for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) at the Nürburgring, ahead of four Mercedes C63 AMG Coupés, led by first practice pace setter Christian Vietoris.

The Spaniard was at the bottom of the timesheets for the majority of the session, before he put in his effort with just four minutes remaining, just 0.085 seconds ahead of Vietoris, with Lucas Auer making it a Mücke Motorsport 2-3.

Team ART’s Gary Paffett and Felix Rosenqvist would be part of a Mercedes stronghold in fourth and fifth, with Paul Di Resta making it five in the top ten.

Maxime Martin was the best placed of the BMW drivers in sixth place, 0.027 seconds ahead of the 2010 champion, whilst current points leader Marco Wittmann would be the only other driver from the Munich stable to join the Belgian down in ninth place, ahead of Robert Wickens.

Team Abt’s Nico Müller was the only other Audi to make it into the top ten in eighth place, with a session that was very close, in terms of lap time, with the top 21 cars split by 0.894 seconds.

Two-time champion Timo Scheider narrowly missed out on the top ten, just 0.019 seconds behind Wickens, but ahead of title contenders Jamie Green and Edoardo Mortara, with the trio separated by 0.063 seconds.

HWA’s Daniel Juncadella and Maximilian Götz were the lowest-placed of the Mercedes stable in 14^th and 15^th, and were within six tenths of a second behind pace setter Molina.

BMW had six of their cars in the lower half of the grid, with Team RMG’s Timo Glock in 17^th, with Martin Tomczyk slowest of all. Team Abt Sportsline’s Mattias Ekström and Team Rosberg’s Adrien Tambay were 20^th and 21^st fastest amidst the pack of M4 DTMs.

Qualifying for the first race at the Nürburgring starts at 12:35 CEST (BST + 1), lasting for 20 minutes.
