Edoardo Mortara storms to race one pole, leading Audi top eight

Photo: Audi Media CenterEdoardo Mortara took a well-deserved pole position for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters sprint race at the Hungaroring, as he struck on his final flying lap in the dying seconds to lead another successive top-eight whitewash for Audi Sport.

The Italian posted the fastest time of a 1:35.282 around the 4.381-km circuit, ahead of Jamie Green and Miguel Molina, with all three drivers split by 0.167 seconds.

Mike Rockenfeller had his best qualifying session of the season, as he lines up alongside Molina in fourth place, with Nico Müller, Adrien Tambay, Timo Scheider and Mattias Ekström rounding out the top eight.

With all eight RS5 DTM’s in the top eight, Felix Rosenqvist upheld Stuttgart honour in ninth place, with his Mercedes being 0.588 seconds off the pace set by Mortara.

Marco Wittmann again was the only driver to make it into the top ten for BMW, leading five other compatriots from Munich, from places 11 to 15, with Tom Blomqvist, Martin Tomczyk, Timo Glock, Maxime Martin and António Félix da Costa.

The top 15 drivers broke the 1m36s barrier, but da Costa will start from 20th on the grid, following his third warning from the stewards at the Nürburgring a fortnight ago.

Martin is under investigation by race control, having been released into the path of Mortara in the melée of drivers leaving pit lane for their final efforts in the 20-minute session.

Daniel Juncadella was the next best of the Mercedes drivers in 16th, but along with Christian Vietoris, Robert Wickens, Gary Paffett and Augusto Farfus, they will start one place higher.

Paul Di Resta, Lucas Auer and Maximilian Götz had a difficult time, occupying the last three places on the gird, with Götz also under investigation by race control for blocking.

Following on from qualifying, both BMW and Mercedes lose five kilograms each, with the latter still being the heaviest on the grid at 1,130 kilos. All eight M4 DTMs will be the lightest on the grid at 1,125 kilos, with Audi a further 2.5 kilos heavier.

Post-qualifying investigations saw both Auer and Götz excluded from the session, due to a breach of parc fermé regulations.

The 15th race of the 2016 DTM season starts at 1458 CEST (BST + 1), lasting for 40-minutes plus one lap.
