Jamie Green dominates, as BMW takes constructors’ crown

Britain’s Jamie Green dominated the final Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) race at the Hockenheimring this afternoon, claiming second place in the drivers’s standings behind new champion Pascal Wehrlein, who finished 20th, but put on a show for the crowd.

The Briton took the lead from pole sitter Gary Paffett in the early stages, and was dominant until the fireworks at the finish line signalled the end of the year’s racing. Paffett would drop back down the order and end up ninth at the finish.

Mattias Ekström and Edoardo Mortara completed a clean sweep of the podium for Audi Sport, with Paul Di Resta finishing fourth as the best placed Mercedes. Penultimate race winner Timo Scheider made it four Audis in the top five, taking fifth, ending his season in a positive way.

BMW Motorsport secured the manufacturers’ crown by just seven points from Audi Sport,  as the Munich brand had Maxime Martin, António Félix da Costa, Bruno Spengler and Martin Tomczyk finished sixth, seventh, eighth and tenth respectively.

Notable retirements were Marco Wittmann, who lost his bonnet on lap 8, along with Christian Vietoris and Adrien Tambay, who both retired after an incident involving Miguel Molina, who collided with Vietoris and Tambay being an innocent victim.

Molina would receive a drive-through, but would finish 11th ahead of Daniel Juncadella. Maximillian Götz was the best of the rookies in the final race of the year in 13th, as Tom Blomqvist and Lucas Auer would finish 17th and 19th.

Blomqvist would end up best rookie of the year, despite being issued a drive-through penalty for pushing Robert Wickens off track. Nico Müller would also receive the same penalty for an unsafe release into the path of Martin Tomczyk, with the Swiss driver ending up 16th.

The DTM ends for another year, with excitement, action and controversy, in what has been one of the best seasons in the series history. The off-season may be long, but it will be worth the wait to see what happens in 2016.
