Vietoris remains top on final day of test

Photo by ITR e.V.Mercedes-Benz’s Christian Vietoris concluded the four-day Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters test as the fastest driver for the second consecutive day, posting a time of 1:37.620.

German Vietoris’ time was two tenths faster than the overall best time achieved during the four day test at the Hungaroring, which was also set by the 25-year-old. The Mercedes driver had only been eighth fastest in the morning session but improved his time by 1.3 seconds in the afternoon as track conditions improved.

Second fastest was BMW’s Augusto Farfus, just 0.020 seconds slower. The DTM’s newest driver, Maxime Martin, posted the third fastest time for BMW Team RMG ahead of the Belgian’s début next month.

Italian Edoardo Mortara, who has moved to Team Abt Sportsline for 2014, took over at the wheel of Miguel Molina’s car for the afternoon session and achieved the fourth fastest time, having earlier been fastest in the morning session. Molina finished the day in ninth overall.

Swede Mattias Ekström, who ended the day seventh fastest but was second quickest in the morning session, admits that he fears overtaking will be difficult at the circuit near Budapest when the DTM makes its return at the end of May.

“The track is very nice and is a lot of fun to drive if you are alone,” said Ekström. “However, I’m afraid that overtaking will be extremely difficult during the race here in June.

“We collected a lot of valuable information during the four test days. It’s always good if you can test before the race at a track. Now we’ll go home, take a breather and then prepare perfectly for Hockenheim.”

BMW’s former champion Martin Tomczyk was the only driver more than a second off the pace – with the German only running during the morning session.
