The Lausitzring (or EuroSpeedway Lausitz) owes its existence in part to the requirement to find a replacement for the former AVUS circuit in Berlin, but also to the need to rejuvenate a landscape scarred by extensive open-pit coal mining in the region.

Original plans date back to the 1980s, but it wasn’t until the 1990s, following German reunification, that momentum developed.

The circuit features a tri-oval unique in Europe, along with an infield road course and a unique testing circuit adjacent to the main motorsports facility. The venue was completed in late 1999.

The DTM should have visited in 2000, but the inaugural touring car event was cancelled due to heavy rain.

In 2001, the circuit hosted the US Champ Car series, but the event was marred by the horrific accident suffered by Alex Zanardi, who lost both legs in a crash.

Champ Car returned once more in 2003, but since then the main event has been the DTM, which has visited annually, whilst in recent years TCR Germany has begun to hold races as well.

In 2017, DEKRA purchased the circuit to use it as a testing venue for road cars, although it still rents the circuit out to host motorsport.
