Santiago Urrutia completes hat-trick of victories in Valencia heat

Geely Cyan Racing’s Santiago Urrutia became the first driver in FIA World Touring car history to claim a clean-sweep of three victories in a single event, with a dominant drive in the final TCR World Tour race in Valencia.

Urrutia started the race from pole thanks to his performances earlier in the weekend, and saw off an initial challenge from team-mate Thed Björk to cruise to victory.

The race settled into an uneventful rhythm, with the Uruguayan going on to win by a second and a half from his Swedish team-mate, and in doing so extend his championship lead to 20 points over Björk.

BRC Racing’s Mikel Azcona completed the podium, after swapping places with Hyundai team-mate Norbert Michelisz on the run to the finish line.

Michelisz was thus fourth, whilst SP Compétition’s Aurélien Comte took fifth, the Frenchman having been passed by both Hyundais on the opening lap having started from third.

Monlau Motorsport’s Viktor Andersson followed behind in his CUPRA to take sixth as the leading TCR Spain competitor – although race three was a non-championship invitational race for the Iberian series contingent.

Cyan Racing’s Yann Ehrlacher finished in seventh, gaining just two places in the race to conclude a tough weekend with his only run to the chequered flag of the weekend.

ALM Motorsport’s Jimmy Clairet was eighth, although the Honda driver was involved in some fierce battling with JSB Compétition’s Julien Briché in the race, which saw the duo make contact several times.

Briché followed in ninth in his Hyundai, whilst the top ten was completed by the ALM Motorsport Honda of Sten-Dorian Piirimägi.

The leading retirement was Cyan Racing’s Ma Qing Hua, who picked up front-end damage on the opening lap when he crashed into the back of team-mate Ehrlacher under braking for Turn 2, and eventually stopped in the pits three laps later to call it a day.
