Sam and Steve Laidlaw to join TCR Europe grid in Barcelona

Father and son racing duo Sam and Steve Laidlaw will join the grid for the TCR Europe season finale in Barcelona, where they will continue to race a brace of CUPRA Leon VZ cars.

They will be entered by Area Motorsport, which is also the first British team to compete in the series since 2020, when Lewis Kent entered one event in his family-run team.

Steve Laidlaw made his TCR début in TCR UK at Snetterton in 2024, being swiftly followed by Sam two events later at Croft.

They moved to the latest CUPRA Leon VZ for the 2024 season finale and have continued in their CUPRAs in 2025, with Steve winning twice and Sam once.

Sam, third in the TCR UK standings, is mathematically still in title contention ahead of the TCR UK season finale at Brands Hatch, whilst Steve sits fourth overall, just 31 points back.

“The purpose of Barcelona is for us to understand the progression that we’ve made this year, against what we know is the very highest of touring car standards,” said Steve Laidlaw.

“You’ve got the best drivers in the world in TCR Europe, and that is irrefutable, no matter what the championship denomination is.

“So, I think for us to go there and measure ourselves against those guys, who are supreme in skill, and learn from them to accelerate our growth further has always been the plan.”

Both drivers have already raced in Spain this year, when they took part in the TCR Spain Preseason event at Valencia in February, finishing on the podium in both races.
