Tom Chilton tops second Donington Park practice

Team Vertu’s Tom Chilton topped the second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Donington Park, three tenths of a second ahead of NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton.

Chilton pipped Sutton to the top time in the final minute of the session when he lapped the Grand Prix circuit in 1 minute 33.129 seconds, ending up a comfortable three tenths clear of the Ford driver.

Chilton, whose only win so far this season came on the Donington Park National configuration back in April, had earlier been eighth quickest in the first session of the day.

Championship leader Tom Ingram put his Hyundai in third, having earlier been second quickest in first practice, ahead of the leading BMW of Charles Rainford in fourth.

Restart Racing’s Daniel Lloyd continued to show strong pace, putting his Hyundai in fifth, the only other driver within four tenths of a second.

First practice pace-setter Daniel Rowbottom was sixth, ahead of the second Restart Racing Hyundai of Chris Smiley in seventh.

The top ten was completed by NAPA’s Dan Cammish, Toyota’s Árón Taylor-Smith and the Ford Focus of Sam Osborne, the latter ensuring all four NAPA Racing UK cars made it into the top ten.

Taylor-Smith was for the second session in a row comfortably the quickest Corolla driver, with the Irishman now running an M Sport TOCA engine instead of the Neil Brown Engineering unit run by the team earlier in the season.

Laser Tools Racing’s reigning champion Jake Hill was 13th, as three of the four BMW drivers missed out on the top ten.

Series returnee Josh Cook, now back in a Toyota, was 19th quickest, just under a second and a half off the pace.

Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:25 BST.
