Chris Smiley tops dry second practice at Thruxton

Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley topped the second British Touring Car Championship practice session of the weekend at Thruxton, lapping the Hampshire circuit just 0.008 seconds ahead of Team Vertu’s Tom Ingram.

Smiley put his Hyundai on top with a lap of 1 minute 14.951 seconds around three quarters of the way through the session, deposing Ingram from the top by a slender margin.

It was nevertheless a Hyundai 1-2 at the top of the times, with WSR’s Charles Rainford, who had also shown top ten pace in first practice, in third as the leading BMW driver.

Dan Cammish was the best of the NAPA Racing UK quartet in fourth, also within a tenth of a second, ahead of team-mate and FP1 pace-setter Ash Sutton in fifth.

Team Vertu’s Senna Proctor continued to impress on his return to the BTCC after several seasons away, ending the session in sixth, ahead of the second Restart Hyundai of Daniel Lloyd in seventh.

The top ten was completed by Team Vertu’s Adam Morgan, Toyota’s Árón Taylor-Smith and Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill.

Qualifying, which is forecast to be affected by rain, gets underway at 15:00 BST.
