GOAT Racing’s Esteban Guerrieri scored his second win of the day in the final FIA TCR World Tour race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in México, finishing ahead of Cyan Racing’s Thed Björk and Santiago Urrutia.
Guerrieri started race three from pole position thanks to having had the highest points score in the weekend prior to the race, and the Argentine duly scored a lights-to-flag victory as he eased into a comfortable lead from the get-go.
Björk was two seconds back at the chequered flag, the Swede having lacked the edge to take the fight to Guerrieri.
Aurélien Comte originally ran third in the SP Compétition CUPRA, but the Frenchman was passed by Urrutia with a superb pass on the outside line at Turn 4 on the second lap, the Uruguayan cutting to the inside at the next turn to take the place.
Urrutia thus went on to complete the podium, a further second behind team-mate Björk.
Comte ran in fourth for much of the race, but ultimately lost out to the hard-charging Honda of Ignacio Montenegro, who got by three laps from the finish, leaving Comte to settle for fifth.
Cyan’s Ma Qing Hua was sixth, but at one stage it looked as if that place might go to Yann Ehrlacher. At the start, Ehrlacher had bogged down from third on the grid, dropping to ninth on the opening lap, before putting in a recovery effort to climb to sixth by lap five.
The safety car was then called for when Humberto Zesati crashed on the fifth lap and his Audi had to be recovered, and when racing resumed on lap 12, Ehrlacher began to drop quickly down the order, lacking straightline speed.
That ultimately meant Ma claimed sixth, whilst Ehrlacher fell to a lowly 16th by the end of the race.
Michel Jourdain was again the leading Mexican competitor in seventh, ahead of fellow CUPRA racer and Mexican Rodrigo Rejón in eighth.
The top ten was completed by SP Compétition’s John Filippi and ProRally Mothers’ Julio Rejón.
The result sees Guerrieri as the early leader in the drivers’ standings with 95 points, ahead of Björk (83), Urrutia (69), Ehrlacher (60) and Comte (60) etc.
The next FIA TCR World Tour event is in Valencia on 13 – 15 June.
