René Rast: Second contest was ‘a race driver’s dream’

Defending Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters champion René Rast described the second race at the Red Bull Ring as a “race driver’s dream” after he scored his fourth consecutive victory.

Race one winner Rast qualified eighth, but rapidly progressed after a blistering start in which he gained four positions in a few corners.

He then undercut title rivals Paul Di Resta and Gary Paffett before closing in on Nico Müller and overtaking for the lead at turn three and scoring Audi’s 100th DTM victory.

With championship leader Di Resta finishing fourth, and polesitter Paffett third, Rast has now reduced the gap in the standings to 30 points with an available 55 up for grabs at the Hockenheim finale.

He credited his fellow Audi racers for victory on Saturday, as Müller and Mike Rockenfeller moved over in the final corners to give Rast more points towards his championship challenge.

“An incredible weekend,” said Rast. “After two poor qualifying sessions, we managed to score two brilliant victories.

Although, in Saturday’s race, a lot of teamwork helped us achieve victory. Being able to help your teammates without a lot of coordination is a hallmark of teamwork. This is what we accomplished.”

In today’s race [23 September], Rast felt he did a perfect job en route to his fourth DTM win in succession.

“The race on Sunday was a race driver’s dream: a perfect start, a good first lap, a perfect strategy, fantastic stops and no mistakes,” he said.

“Everything went according to plan. Before the season finale, we further reduced our gaps to the two championship leaders. Anything can happen at Hockenheim.”
