Tom Coronel: Slovakia Ring ‘suits my driving style’

Boutsen Ginion Racing’s Tom Coronel believes the 3.6 mile Slovakia Ring circuit will suit his driving style as he aims for a strong set of results in this weekend’s FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) triple-header.

The Dutch endured a difficult weekend last time out at Vila Real, sandwiching a 15th placed finish with two retirements on the Portuguese streets.

Heading to the Slovakia Ring this weekend, however, the DHL-backed racer is hoping for an improved turn of form on a circuit he has previously tasted victory at in the now-defunct WTCC.

He also believes tyre management will prove crucial to success this weekend, with ambient temperatures expected to stay in the high 20s.

“The Slovakia Ring is a bit different because it’s a modern circuit with the characteristics of a much older track; there are big gravel traps and lots of climbs and blind apexes, so it’s big challenge where you need a mixture of bravery and precision to do a good lap,” explained Coronel.

“The temperatures in the middle of summer will be high too, so keeping some life in your tyres will be important.

“I won there in 2013 and I scored points in eight of the 10 races I started there in World Touring Cars, so it’s definitely a track that suits my driving style.”

Coronel’s first on-track action will come in first practice, which gets underway at 11:40 BST.
