NAPA Racing UK’s Daniel Rowbottom took victory in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Croft, as team-mate Ash Sutton recovered from the back of the grid to finish in fifth.
With the top three finishers from race one starting on the less favourable hard tyre, Rowbottom knew he would have to work his way into the lead quickly. However, race one winner Tom Ingram held the lead at the start, the Team Vertu driver prevailing for the first two laps before Rowbottom made his move.
Diving inside at Tower, Ingram didn’t put up a fight to his rival on the faster tyre, and Rowbottom assumed the lead, quickly pulling over a second clear of Chilton, who had followed him past Ingram on the same lap.
WSR’s Daryl DeLeon completed the podium, making more gradual moves on Ingram and NAPA’s Dan Cammish over the following two laps to move into a podium position.
Thereafter the race was a relatively sedate affair of seeing how far back the hard-tyre shod drivers would fall.
Adam Morgan passed Team Vertu team-mate Ingram for fourth on the sixth lap, whilst WSR’s Charles Rainford followed into fifth a lap later.
However, it was the charging Sutton who ultimately finished in fifth, having passed Rainford on the tenth lap in a strong drive on the soft tyre, having thankfully got the hard tyres out of the way in his disastrous opening race.
Rainford took sixth, ahead of Toyota’s Gordon Shedden and points leader Ingram in eighth.
WSR’s Aiden Moffat was ninth, and has been randomly drawn to start the reverse-grid final race from pole position. NAPA’s Cammish completed the top ten.
Toyota’s Árón Taylor-Smith had looked set for another top ten result, before the Irishman had to pit on lap nine with a front-left puncture.
Un-Limited Motorsport’s Dexter Patterson was the top Independent driver in 11th.
Having claimed a first podium of the season in race one, Team Vertu’s Senna Proctor struggled on the hard tyre in race two and was running in 15th before he was also given a ten second time penalty for exceeding track limits, leaving him to be classified in 19th.
Race three is scheduled to get underway at 17:10 BST.
