Dan Cammish claimed victory in the second British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Donington Park, which ended behind the safety car after rain hit three laps from the finish.
Race one winner and pole-sitter Tom Chilton made a good start to lead from Team Vertu team-mate Tom Ingram at the start, whilst Ash Sutton got the jump on NAPA Racing UK team-mate Daniel Rowbottom to assume third.
The race had to be neutralised at the end of the opening lap, however, after Senna Proctor lost the rear of his car at McLeans and knocked WSR’s Aiden Moffat into the gravel, with NAPA’s Sam Osborne also ending up in the gravel.
Both Moffat and Osborne were able to continue in the race, but Proctor’s Team Vertu Hyundai had front-end damage and had to be recovered from the circuit.
Racing resumed on lap five and the drama was immediate: Rowbottom made contact with the back of team-mate Sutton’s car heading into Redgate, sending the Ford into a slide and causing front-end damage when he hit the back of Ingram, who had just taken the lead from Chilton.
Sutton held the slide, but in turn delayed Chilton, who had gone to the outside line at the first corner.
Cammish, meanwhile, went from fifth to second, with Adam Morgan, Daryl DeLeon, Chris Smiley, Gordon Shedden and Árón Taylor-Smith all following through in the melee.
Rowbottom backed off to let Sutton in front at the Old Hairpin after his mistake, but the damage had been done and Sutton fell to 13th, after also tangling with Taylor-Smith and skipping across the gravel at the same corner.
Cammish, with a tyre advantage over Ingram, then took the lead on the next lap and looked to have sealed the deal, but a sudden rain shower on lap 15 caused him and half the field to go off at McLeans.
Cammish survived in front, but Ingram lost his podium position, whilst Shedden was the biggest beneficiary, gaining five places and ending up in the final podium place.
Due to the sudden change in conditions, the safety car was immediately called and the race finished under full course yellows.
Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley would have been fourth and the top Independent, but he later failed the ride height check and was excluded from the result.
Ingram finished in fourth, and in the process has extended his points lead over Sutton to 26 points – more than a race win.
WSR’s Daryl DeLeon was fifth, losing just one place after his off in the wet conditions, ahead of Toyota’s Josh Cook in sixth, who had a much stronger race following a change to his car between the races.
Taylor-Smith was seventh, ahead of Sutton in eighth. With Smiley’s exclusion, the NAPA driver was promoted into the top eight, giving him the reverse-grid pole for race three and a chance to salvage a result from an otherwise challenging weekend, although Sutton still has to run the hard tyre unless it rains for the finale.
Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill and Restart Racing’s Daniel Lloyd completed the top ten.
WSR’s Charles Rainford had been battling with Taylor-Smith for 11th but spun out on lap 12 exiting the final corner, leaving the BMW driver to finish down in 17th.
Race three is scheduled to get underway at 16:55 BST.
