Chris Smiley tops the times in second practice at Oulton Park

Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley went quickest in a shower-affected second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Oulton Park, a tenth of a second ahead of Toyota’s Árón Taylor-Smith.

A short but sharp rain shower ahead of the session meant that the opening minutes took place on a damp and slippery circuit, with the majority of drivers undertaking their initial running on wet tyres.

But conditions quickly improved and after 15 minutes timed dipped below the 1 minute 30 second mark, when Toyota’s Gordon Shedden went quickest on two successive laps.

Mikey Doble, Smiley and Tom Ingram then exchanged top times in what were dry conditions and meaningful laps, before Smiley emerged as the quickest of the field with his effort of 1:24.288 with just over 12 minutes to go.

Ten seconds before the chequered flag, Taylor-Smith then went second, 0.134 seconds adrift, with Ingram in third, having left it until the final five minutes to go for a meaningful lap time.

Toyota’s James Dorlin was fourth, ahead of the second Team Vertu Hyundai of Adam Morgan in fifth.

Another good session for the Toyotas saw Gordon Shedden make it three Corollas in the top seven, whilst Power Maxed Racing’s Doble ended up in eighth.

The top ten was completed by Un-Limited Motorsport’s Dexter Patterson, who had briefly been fastest as conditions improved, and the leading NAPA Racing UK car of Dan Cammish.

First practice pace-setter Daniel Rowbottom was 11th behind his NAPA team-mate, whilst the leading WSR-run BMW was Daryl DeLeon in 12th, as reigning champion Jake Hill was only 19th – following on from 16ht in FP1.

Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:00 BST.
