Dan Cammish is targeting a trio of ‘strong results’ on race day in the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch, after ceding that fifth in qualifying was ‘a true representation’ of his pace.
Cammish had been the quickest NAPA Racing UK driver throughout qualifying and along with Sam Osborne was one of only two Ford drivers to progress to Q2.
Cammish then pipped his team-mate in the final seconds of Q2 to make it into the ‘Quick Six’ final session, where he put his car in fifth on the grid for Sunday’s opening race, 0.213 seconds behind pole-sitter Jake Hill.
Like team-mate Ash Sutton, Cammish believes that he maximised the performance out of his car and that he couldn’t have gone any faster, given the fact that he has just seven seconds of TOCA turbo Boost in qualifying, whilst those ahead of him had more, with the exception of Tom Ingram.
“It was a good qualifying; I’m really happy with the performance we got out of it,” Cammish told TouringCars.Net. “I’m happy with how the session has progressed. On the Q2 and Q3 laps that was it – that was absolutely everything.
“Where we are is a true representation of what the car could do today with me in it – I’m pretty confident of that.
“If you look at the people around us, a lot of them have got a bit more button, a bit more boost and that’s as it should be. The anomaly there is Tom [Ingram]. But we know how strong that engine is and how slippery that car is.
“You only have to look at the speed trap figures to see that we’re not far off going the same speed even with us pressing the button. He’s the one that’s in a very strong position, but so am I.”
With Cammish believing he couldn’t extract any more pace out of his car in qualifying, he admits that his target in the opening race will be to ‘pick up the pieces’ around the podium.
“I want three really strong good results. We can be in the mix all year. It’s going to swing and flip flop between a few different people.
“You’re going to have different people at the front as we’re seeing. There are different guys up there this week to two weeks ago and next time it will be different again. It’s going to be about averaging out those scores.
“It looks like a bit of a BMW weekend in some respects. But equally it’s going to be a warm one and you’ve got to do 24 laps, not just one in each session, and I don’t know how they go over a longer distance.
“We’ll make our car as good as we can and see if it comes back to us over race day. If it doesn’t, I’ll be there hopefully to make Tom’s life difficult and pick up the pieces around the podium.”
