Tom Ingram doubles up in dry second race at Donington

EXCELR8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram doubled up in the second British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park, equalling his win tally from last year already.

The start saw Laser Tools Racing’s Jake Hill shoot from the second row of the grid into an early lead, as Ingram and NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton slotted into second and third respectively.

Further around the lap, Team BMW’s Colin Turkington locked up into McLeans and allowed Speedworks motorsport’s Josh Cook into fourth.

Hill held the lead for the first half of the race, initially extending an advantage of over a second, but by the mid point it was down to less than half a second as Ingram closed in.

By lap 13 Ingram was all over the back of the leading BMW, and the Hyundai driver made his move for the lead exiting Redgate corner, completing the pass through the Craner Curves.

Sutton then followed past Hill for second into the Old Hairpin, although the reigning champion then had to fight off an attack from Hill a lap later into the chicane.

By this stage, Ingram had opened up clear air over Sutton, and went on to double up his win tally, with Sutton and Hill completing the podium.

Cook held fourth for the duration of the race and finished as the leading Toyota, ahead of Turkington in fifth.

NAPA’s Dan Cammish was sixth, gaining a place when Ronan Pearson went off the circuit at Coppice on lap five and subsequently pitted, before passing Árón Taylor-Smith’s Vauxhall a lap later at McLeans.

Team BMW’s Adam Morgan, who had been penalised with a ten-second penalty for a false start in race one, took seventh after a determined drive to make up seven places over the race, ahead of Speedworks’ Aiden Moffat in eighth.

Another driver making moves through the field was Toyota’s Rob Huff, who had started down in 18th place but fought back progressively through the race to claim ninth at the chequered flag.

That result gave the 2012 World Champion the reverse-grid pole for the final race of the day, which is currently scheduled to get underway at 18:10 BST.

NAPA’s Daniel Rowbottom completed the top ten, gaining five places at the start before making steady progress thereafter, although not at the same pace as Huff, who passed him on lap eight.

Taylor-Smith eventually finished in 11th, ahead of the second factory-backed Toyota of Andrew Watson in 12th.

Only Restart Racing’s Scott Sumpton and EXCELR8’s Tom Chilton failed to finish the race, the latter having pitted with black smoke emanating from his Hyundai on lap 11 whilst he was running in 11th.

Although NAPA Racing UK managed to repair Sam Osborne’s car following his race one shunt, the Ford driver failed to take the start after pitting at the end of the warm-up lap.
