Gen 1 Cup to boost TCR UK grid in 2024

A new sub-class has been announced for the 2024 TCR UK Touring Car Championship season as the Gen 1 Cup is introduced.

This will be a separate category for the Generation 1 cars within the overall TCR UK championship. These vehicles will be competing for their own trophies and have their own Cup classification at the end of the year.

Currently, cars that are eligible include the Audi RS3 LMS TCR, the Cupra TCR, and the VW Golf GTI TCR as well as the Vauxhall Astra TCR. However, more models are planned to be confirmed in the future.

Championship Promoter Stewart Lines sees that changes had to be introduced to
bring more drivers into the championship.

“As the Promoter and rights holder for all TCR activities in the UK, we’ve recognised now that there needs to be some changes going forward to help drivers be part of our platform and be recognised for their participation.

“These changes will generate opportunities for people in older TCR cars who want to be a part of the TCR family and give them a chance to win a TCR championship in their own right. Next year’s package and associated support races will be the place to be in 2024.”

Championship Manager Ashley Gallagher believes that the TCR UK grid will grow due to the introduction of the new class.

“After a really successful return to headline events for TCR UK in 2023, 2024 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for the championship in terms of spectator numbers and viewing figures on our live streams. This announcement about the 2024 Gen 1 Cup gives even more competitors the chance to join the grid and reap the benefits of being part of the most up-and-coming package in UK motorsport.”
