Jac Constable edges to Croft TCR UK pole position

Jac Constable claimed his first pole position in the TCR UK series at Croft, as the Rob Boston Racing driver edged out Carl Boardley by just 0.026 seconds.

Constable, who had managed just two laps in the earlier free practice session, left it until the very end of the session to claim pole, posting a lap of 1 minute 22.408 seconds in his Audi in the final seconds to deny Boardley, who had put his CUPRA on top of the times six minutes prior.

It means that Constable will start from pole for the first time in his TCR UK career, having raced in the series for three years now.

Boardley shares a front-row start in only his second event in the series, whilst both drivers on the second row of the grid – Bradley Kent and Callum Newsham – were also within a tenth of a second of pole.

Indeed, Essex & Kent Motorsport’s Kent had put his Hyundai Veloster N on pole just ten minutes into the session, and he held that position for over 13 minutes until Boardley bettered his time by 0.033 seconds.

Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley put his Honda Civic in fifth, the reigning champion just over two tenths off the pace, ahead of the second Rob Boston Audi of Joe Marshall-Birks in sixth.

Jenson Brickley qualified his CUPRA in seventh, ahead of Adam Shepherd in eighth. Shepherd had just a few days earlier said he was not going to race at Croft this weekend due to budgetary issues, only to turn up at the circuit in his Hyundai and compete after all.

The top ten was completed by the Area Motorsport Hyundai i30s of Alex Ley and championship leader Bruce Winfield, the latter three quarters of a second from pole.

Bradley Hutchison was one of the first to set the pace in the session, posting a lap of 1:23.452 just over five minutes in to go fastest, but the Audi driver thereafter slipped down the order as he was only able to improve his time by a tenth, ultimately ending up in 11th.

Race one is scheduled to get underway at 12:05 BST on Sunday, followed by race two at 17:35 BST.
