Ash Sutton wins after late penalty means Ricky Collard falls to eighth

There was confusion on the final lap of the third British Touring Car Championsip race at Brands Hatch, as Ash Sutton won from 11th on the grid to make it two from three.

Ricky Collard was given a ten-second time penalty on the final lap for track limits offences. The Toyota Gazoo Racing UK team seemed unaware of the issue that left the driver and the team celebrating despite eventually finishing eighth with a penalty.

Sutton was blistering from the start making up six positions on the opening lap to leave him in fifth early on, as Collard assumed the lead from second on the grid.

The NAPA Racing UK driver made it two positions in two laps straight after to put him in third with only three laps completed.

By the end of lap five Sutton had moved up to second passing eventual second place finisher Bobby Thompson with a move on the Team HARD racer heading into Clearways. Then all was left for Sutton was to hunt down Collard.

Sutton had managed to get close and pulled a move off into Paddock Hill Bend and then Collard pulled back in front on the run up to Druids. In the end a second tyre over the sensor was the end of it all as despite crossing the line first, Collard finished eighth with his penalty applied.

Thompson had a strong outing in second, showing the potential of the CUPRA for races to come, improving significantly after Donington Park.

Behind was Tom Ingram in the EXCELR8 Hyundai who had a strong Sunday as like Sutton he made multiple places on the opening lap to complete the podium from tenth on the grid.

Dan Cammish came home in fourth to keep the championship lead as the paddock heads toward Snetterton, finishing ahead of Colin Turkington in the Team BMW as the highest runner on the medium tyre at the end of the race.

Team BMW’s Adam Morgan finished in sixth to make the weekend end on a positive after the red flag shunt that left him out of the opening race with a heavily damaged car. Behind him was EXCELR8’s Tom Chilton, who walked away in seventh in the standings having also taken a consistent approach to the opening two rounds.

Dan Rowbottom was the next of the finishers who had been involved in the race one stoppage. The NAPA Racing UK driver moved forward from 15th on the grid to the end the day on a much brighter note than the start in ninth.

Rounding out the top ten was One Motorsport’s Josh Cook who was looking at a much better result before a trip through the gravel trap brought him back down the field. The highest Cook had been running in the race was sixth until his off-track excursion.

The race had looked very promising for Toyota Gazoo Racing UK in the opening laps, as Collard assumed the lead and Rory Butcher moved into third on the opening tour, pursued by team-mate George Gamble in sixth.

But Gamble hit troubles on lap 13, before Butcher utlimately stopped two laps later with smoke emanating from his Corolla, forcing him to pull off the circuit.
