Tom Ingram triumphs in race three as title to be decided between four contenders

Excelr8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram won the final British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone, holding firm in front of NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton, as the title race was whittled down to four drivers.

BTC Racing’s Josh Cook had been drawn onto pole position for the partially-reversed grid, but he was under pressure from the off.

NAPA Racing’s Dan Cammish, who had started alongside, made a better start but Cook immediately moved to cover the Ford, resulting in contact before the first corner.

That allowed Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan into second, but at the next corner the BMW driver got into the back of Cook, knocking the Honda into a slide and allowing Ingram to slip through into the lead pursued by Sutton.

At the same time, Toyota’s Rory Butcher assumed the final podium place, whilst Morgan slipped back to sixth by the end of the opening tour after further contact with Team Dynamics’ Gordon Shedden.

Morgan then dropped a further seven places on lap four after contact with Ollie Jackson made him run wide at Copse.

The Lancashire driver’s race then unravelled fully on lap six when he was spun at Becketts by Team BMW’s Stephen Jelley, with contact from Ash Hand and Ricky Collard in the process as they tried to avoid the BMW facing the wrong way.

The safety car had to be called to recover the Toyota and Vauxhall, which had gone off into the gravel, before racing resumed for only one lap on lap ten before being neutralised again when Nicolas Hamilton stopped his CUPRA on the exit of Copse with broken rear suspension.

The action resumed on lap 14, with Ingram managing to again break free of Sutton, who ultimately fell to a second and a half back from Ingram, who scored his fourth win of the campaign.

Sutton took second and remained as the points leader, whilst Butcher ended the day having never finished off the podium.

A determined drive from MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill saw the BMW racer finish fourth, having gained three places after the final safety car intervention, picking off Tom Chilton and Cook exiting the final corner of the lap before blasting past Cammish along the Wellington straight six laps from the end.

Cammish finished in fifth, marking a second successive weekend of scoring a trio of top ten results, ahead of Cook in sixth.

Cook has finally dropped out of contention for the drivers’ title after failing to win the race, also falling behind Butcher in the standings after the Scot’s strong weekend.

Excelr8’s Chilton was seventh after a late-race squabble with Shedden, with the latter coming home in eighth having lost time with a contact-induced slide on the penultimate lap.

The top ten was completed by Motorbase’s Ollie Jackson and Team HARD’s Árón Taylor-Smith.

Colin Turkington endured another tough race, only managing 12th and losing a place to Excelr8’s Daniel Lloyd on the final lap, leaving the four-time champion 27 points adrift in the title race heading into the season finale.

Laser Tools Racing’s miserable weekend continued when Aiden Moffat crawled to a standstill on the first formation lap with a broken driveshaft, prompting a delayed start.

Will Powell was the race’s only other retirement following contact with Rick Parfitt Jr.

Leaving Silverstone, Sutton is the new championship leader with 345 points, ahead of Hill (340), Ingram (338) and Turkington (318). The season finale takes place at Brands Hatch in two weeks’ time.
