Cyan Racing’s Yann Ehrlacher topped second practice for the FIA World Touring Car Cup at MotorLand Aragón, as times tumbled despite the heat rising in Spain.
Ehrlacher put his Lynk & Co on top with a lap of 2 minutes 5.579 seconds, going fastest in the final seconds of the session as drivers began to put in qualifying simulations late in the session.
The reigning champion’s lap time was almost eight tenths of a second quicker than the fastest time posted by Rob Huff earlier in the day, and was nearly three tenths of a second faster than second-placed Norbert Michelisz.
Ehrlacher’s time was also below the qualifying lap record posted in 2021 by Frédéric Vervisch around the circuit.
BRC Racing’s Michelisz and Cyan Racing’s Santiago Urrutia were both late improvements to end up in second and third respectively, both just under three tenths of a second off the pace.
Home racer Mikel Azcona made it two Hyundais in the top four, with Cyan Racing’s Yvan Muller in fifth just over half a second slower than his pace-setting team-mate.
Comtoyou Racing’s Mehdi Bennani was sixth quickest as the top Audi driver, ahead of team-mate Tom Coronel in seventh.
Dániel Nagy had shot up to second with five minutes to go, but the Zengő Motorsport driver ultimately ended up in eighth after other’s late improvements, nevertheless being the top CUPRA driver.
The top ten was completed by the Audi of Gilles Magnus, who had topped the times early on with his best lap but failed to improve in the second half of the session, and the Lynk & Co of Thed Björk.
Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:30 CEST (14:30 BST).
