Jake Hill quickest in red-flagged second practice at Thruxton

Jake Hill topped the times in the final practice session for the British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton, which saw a late red flag cause an early end to proceedings.

The first true fast lap went to NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish ten minutes into the session, which was quickly bettered by team-mate Ashley Sutton on the next lap.

Sutton then held the top time for just over ten minutes, before Hill put his BMW on top of the times, initially with an effort of 1 minute 15.795 seconds before the MB Motorsport driver went slightly quicker the next time around, lowering the benchmark to a 1:15.722.

That effort ended up being three tenths of a second slower than the pace in the morning session set by BTC Racing’s Josh Cook, but it gave Hill enough of an advantage to end the 40-minute session 0.174 seconds clear of Sutton.

Cook was third quickest as the leading Honda, two tenths back, ahead of the Team Dynamics Civic of Daniel Rowbottom in fourth.

It was Daniel Lloyd’s turn to be the top Excelr8 Motorsport Hyundai driver this time around as he put in a lap good enough for fifth, ahead of Cammish in sixth.

Gordon Shedden broke into the top ten for the first time with the seventh best lap, the only other driver within half a second of the pace.

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington was eighth, with the top ten being completed by BTC’s Jason Plato and Excelr8’s Tom Chilton.

Championship leader Tom Ingram, without any hybrid boost for the qualifying session later in the day, was only 13th quickest, just under a second off the pace.

Bobby Thompson was the only one of Team HARD’s CUPRA drivers to break the top twenty, with the series’ most recent podium finisher down in 16th.

Power Maxed Racing’s Michael Crees missed the earlier practice session with an electrical issue but was able to post the 18th fastest time in the afternoon.

It was a difficult session for the Toyotas, with Rory Butcher only in 20th having had a huge spin, whilst Ricky Collard was 24th, almost two seconds off the pace.

The session was cut short when Aiden Moffat’s Infiniti spun and stopped by the track.

Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:20 BST.
