Tom Ingram scythes through to win on the road before penalty

Excelr8 Motorsport’s Tom Ingram scythed through the order from 11th on the grid to win the second British Touring Car Championship race at Donington Park, finishing ahead of race one winner Gordon Shedden.

UPDATE: However, Ingram was later handed a post-race one-second penalty following a protest by Team Dynamics that he had gained an unfair advantage in passing the Honda driver, dropping him to second.

At the start, Ingram rocketed from 11th up to sixth on the opening lap, as at the front of the field Toyota’s Rory Butcher jumped ahead of Power Maxed Racing’s Daniel Lloyd to claim second.

Butcher then took the lead from Shedden at the exit of the first corner, although the lead would be short-lived as Shedden re-claimed the position from his brother-in-law on the second lap at the Old Hairpin.

The ballast-free Ingram, meanwhile had passed BMW’s Colin Turkington for fifth at the first corner, before dispatching BTC Racing’s Senna Proctor for fourth on the run to the chicane at the end of the lap.

The next lap saw Ingram overtake Lloyd for third at Coppice, before he passed Butcher for second at the first corner on lap five.

At this stage, Shedden had opened up a lead of 1.3 seconds at the front, but it only took three laps for Ingram to close down the gap and be all over the rear bumper of the Honda.

Lap ten saw Ingram finally pass Shedden at the exit of Coppice on the run to the chicane, and once in front the Hyundai driver never looked back, eventually claiming his fourth win of the season by just under a second.

Shedden held on to take second in his fully-ballasted Honda, with Butcher completing the podium.

Laser Tools Racing’s Ash Sutton was fourth in a fortuitous race for the championship leader. At one stage, it had looked that he would lose points to both Ingram and Turkington, but dramas befell the latter on lap 13.

Turkington had been running in sixth by lap three, having lost out to Ingram early on, but a handful of laps later he was up to fourth after picking off Proctor and Lloyd.

However whilst pressuring Butcher for third, the four-time champion clipped the kerb at the Old Hairpin and spun all by himself, dropping him down to 11th.

In the avoiding action that followed, Sutton picked up two places to fourth, having passed both Josh Cook and Proctor in the two laps preceding.

Lloyd claimed fifth at the chequered flag, ahead of Proctor in sixth and BTC team-mate Josh Cook in seventh.

Aiden Moffat brought home the second Laser Tools Infiniti in eighth, with the top ten being completed by MB Motorsport’s Jake Hill and Team Dynamics’ Daniel Rowbottom.

Turkington took the flag in 11th, unable to recover any of his lost ground in the final three laps. However, the BMW driver had a turn of luck after the race when the top 11 were randomly selected to be reversed, giving him pole position for the final encounter.

Elsewhere, PMR’s Jason Plato finished outside the points in 18th after the Vauxhall driver was squeezed out on the exit of the first corner on the opening lap, losing him 11 places in one go.

Race three is scheduled to begin at 17:20 BST.
