Double podium finisher Franco Girolami says “he did everything he could” after earning a pair of second place finishes in the two TCR Europe races at the Nürburgring.
After Azcona grabbed the win in race one from Girolami on the final lap, Sunday’s second race of the weekend saw Azcona pull away from both Girolami and British driver Jack Young to further extend his championship lead.
However, despite not being able to match his pace across the weekend, Girolami was quick to praise the former champion after the end of Sunday’s race.
“Azcona is on another planet – he is very fast and he has a very good car,” said Girolami.
“I am very happy because we did the maximum possible result for us. We did a very clever first lap, I overtook something four or five cars and someone in front of me made a mistake and I was able to move up another place. I am very happy.”
“I’m really happy for everybody with this result – for the mechanics, the engineers, my brother who is here and all the PSS team.
“We did everything we could to get second place, yesterday and today, and this is really the maximum we could do.”
Girolami now sits 32 points behind Azcona in the Drivers Standings, with their nearest rival, Niels Langeveld, a further 43 points behind in third.
