Mikel Azcona ‘not disappointed’ to be beaten to pole position

Volcano Motorsport’s Mikel Azcona insists that he isn’t disappointed to be beaten to pole position for the TCR Europe season opener at the Slovakiaring, having missed out by just over a tenth of a second.

Spaniard Azcona is still chasing his first podium finish at the circuit in touring car racing, although he set himself up well with a front-row grid position for Saturday afternoon’s first race.

The CUPRA driver, who is this year also campaigning a full season in WTCR alongside TCR Europe, was comfortably beaten to the top time by the Audi of Coronel, who has always gone well at the Slovakiaring.

Looking ahead to the race, the 2018 champion says that single-lap pace is not so important, and he believes he can take the fight to his Dutch rival.

“I’m not disappointed,” said Azcona, whose best finish at the track is fourth in last year’s WTCR. “Of course every driver wants to be on pole position, but honestly Tom Coronel did a really good job and he was pushing a little too much for me.

“I couldn’t do any better because I was pushing on my best lap with new tyres and he did a really great lap.

“But I am happy to be behind him because P2 is a really good position. The difference between us is under two tenths but in the race that doesn’t matter.

“I feel okay for the race this afternoon so let’s see how it goes.”
