Luca Engstler has been hit with a brace of penalties after today’s World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) races at Motorland Aragón.
After an eighth place finish in race one, Engstler had the opportunity to score a big haul of points in the race two thanks to a front row start on the reversed-grid.
Unfortunately for the young German, his car bogged down as the lights went out, leaving him as a sitting duck unable to defend from the cars behind.
Having lost his chance of a podium almost immediately, Engstler was keen to work his way back up the order. However, it appears as though he was a little too keen as the stewards have awarded him a 10-second time penalty for track limits abuse.
As such, Engstler drops from sixth in the finishing order of that race, to ninth.
In race three, his weekend would go from bad to worse. After missing his breaking point at the penultimate corner on lap one, Engstler locked the brakes of his Hyundai, which then fishtailed into the side of Nestor Girolami, taking them both out of the race.
For this offence, the stewards have brandished Engstler with a five-place grid penalty for the next race in two weeks’ time.
