Tom Coronel believes second in qualifying is a ‘big surprise’

TCR Europe returnee Tom Coronel believed his experience was the main reason why he finished second in qualifying at Spa-Francorchamps.

Coronel, who makes his first appearance in the championship this weekend since the opening rounds at Paul Ricard, was one of the drivers who set his best time right at the end of the second section of qualifying.

“To be honest, this result is a big surprise,” said the Boutsen Ginion Racing driver.

“I think in this case, it’s one of those things when experience is really important and our call was really the best one.

“I was pushing the front tyres and told the guys to put them on the rear, so we had full slicks. It was dirty at the entries to the corners and there was oversteer, but I decided to use full slicks and it worked out.”

The WTCR race winner also went on to admit that he thinks he is in a position the grid that somewhat flatters where he thinks he should be compared to his rivals.

“On the last two laps, it started to rain, and I thought ‘uh oh, we could be in trouble’ but that was it and I was reasonably happy,” he went on to explain.

“I know I won’t stay in P2 as the other guys are faster than me on the straight and so I will be a sitting duck, but I will happily take this moment of fame!

“The confidence is always there, in fact I think my problem is over-confidence which is my handicap, but it also helps like in this case.”

Coronel will be hoping for a much stronger weekend than at Paul Ricard, where he retired from both races.

The first TCR Europe race in Belgium this weekend takes place this afternoon at 16:50 CEST (15:50 BST).
