John Filippi ‘quite happy’ after ‘one of the most tricky qualifying sessions’

Target Competition’s John Filippi claimed ‘you didn’t know from lap to lap how the track will be’ after taking third place in qualifying in the TCR Europe series at Spa.

Filippi, who was one of the drivers to benefit from ever-changing track conditions in a action packed qualifying session, will line up alongside teammate Andreas Bäckman on row two for the opening race of the weekend on Friday afternoon.

“I’m quite happy with P3,” commented the French driver. “The conditions were really tricky; in fact, it’s one of the most difficult qualifying sessions I can remember.

”You don’t know from lap to lap how the track will be, whether or not it’s improving.

“From Q1 to Q2 we were thinking if we should put all slick tyres on the car – at the end, we decided to take the risk and it worked.”

Ahead of the opening race of the weekend, Filippi is now sixth in the championship standings, eight points behind Dániel Nagy, but admitted he’s focused purely on the two races this weekend without looking too far ahead into the future.

“It (the result) meant good points from Qualifying for me and the team, but of course I don’t know how much weight that means I will have for the next race but I prefer to stay focused for today and tomorrow.

“We had to take a decision on the setup when we saw that the track was still wet, so we went for the wet setup and after that it was up to the tyres and the driving.”

Race one in Belgium is set to get underway later this afternoon at 16:50 CEST (15:50 BST).
