René Rast takes second pole of season for race two

René Rast secured his second pole position of the season in qualifying for the second DTM race at Assen, edging out Saturday’s pole-sitter Loïc Duval and race one winner Robin Frijns.

Audi once again dominated the proceedings at an overcast Assen, with its drivers locking out the top times throughout the 20-minute session.

Rast had been the quickest driver on the first set of fast laps early in the session, lapping in 1 minute 23.258 seconds before the mid-session pit stops for tyre changes.

The reigning champion then went even quicker in the final minute, lapping with a time of 1:22.976 to go just 0.029 seconds faster than Duval.

Frijns, who claimed his first DTM win on home soil on Saturday, was third, a tenth of a second off the pole pace.

Crucially, Rast gains three additional points for pole as series leader Nico Müller could manage just fourth, the first time this season that the Swiss points leader has been outside the top three in qualifying.

Mike Rockenfeller put his Team Phoenix Audi in fifth for the second day in a row, giving Audi a top five lockout.

BMW’s best driver was once again Team RMR’s Jonathan Aberdein in sixth, the South African being four tenths off the pace.

WRT’s Ferdinand von Habsburg was seventh, unable to improve his time on his final run, ahead of BMW’s Timo Glock in eighth.

Brit Harrison Newey made it into the top ten for the third time this season and qualified his WRT Audi in ninth, as he did on Saturday, with independent BMW runner Robert Kubica completing the top ten with his best qualifying performance to-date.

With just two factory cars in the top ten, BMW endured an even worse qualifying session than Saturday. Two-time champion Marco Wittmann was just 11th, whilst the Lasutizring’s Sunday race winner last time out, Lucas Auer, was slowest of all in 16th, 1.6 seconds off the pace.

Race two is scheduled to get underway at 13:33 CEST (12:33 BST).
