Reigning champion Colin Turkington was fastest again in the second British Touring Car Championship practice session at Donington Park.
The four-time champion led his Team BMW stablemate Tom Oliphant by nearly a quarter of a second, albeit with the Northern Irishman nearly three tenths adrift of his earlier pace.
In what was a disjointed 40-minute session, Ash Sutton and Matt Neal topped the timesheets early on before a red flag halted proceedings as Jack Goff’s Volkswagen was recovered at McLean’s.
The session resumed with twenty minutes remaining before another red flag stoppage with just over ten minutes to go, this time with a swifter recovery.
In the final quarter of the session, the times tumbled as first Oliphant went quickest, before his team-mate eclipsed him with a time of 1:09.705.
Toyota Gazoo Racing UK’s Tom Ingram was third fastest, ahead of Sutton who enjoyed a strong session in his Laser Tools Racing Infiniti Q50.
Rounding out the top five just four-thousandths-of-a-second behind was Rory Butcher in Motorbase Performance’s new-for-2020 Ford Focus ST.
The Scot placed ahead of Chris Smiley in another car that makes its competitive debut this weekend, the Hyundai i30 N of Excelr8 Motorsport.
Adam Morgan’s Ciceley Motorsport Mercedes-Benz was next in seventh position, placing ahead of early pacesetter Neal, who would eventually finish the session six tenths off the benchmark time.
Making it two Hyundais in the top ten was Senna Proctor in the second Excelr8-run machine in ninth position, while Bobby Thompson completed the top ten in his Trade Price Cars Audi S3.
2019 runner-up Dan Cammish just missed out on the top ten spots in 11th, as Jake Hill took 12th in the older FK2 Honda Civic Type R.
Stephen Jelley’s BMW 125i M Sport would finish the session 13th ahead of Sam Osborne in the second MB Motorsport Honda Civic with Josh Cook completing the top 15 runners.
Qualifying for the opening race of the 2020 British Touring Car Championship season is set to get underway at 15:20 BST.
