Colin Turkington extends championship lead with Snetterton race two victory

Team BMW’s Colin Turkington extended his standings advantage with a win in the second British Touring Car Championship contest at Snetterton.

The reigning champion started fourth on the grid and immediately jumped to second on the run down to the first corner as Turkington passed Sam Tordoff and then Dan Cammish.

He then set about pressurising race one winner Tom Ingram, whose Toyota Corolla was laden with maxiumum ballast meaning he was forced to defend heavily.

On the seventh tour, Turkington made a lunge down the inside at the Montreal hairpin while team-mate Andrew Jordan tried to hang on around the outside.

He was hung out to dry and Cammish benefitted while Jordan and Ingram fell back, with the latter eventually coming home a lowly 24th seemingly with damage.

Despite his heavy Honda, Cammish was then able to hold onto that second position despite Jordan’s best attempts, while Turkington extended his lead to over 40 points out front.

Race one podium finisher Sam Tordoff completed the top five while Jason Plato was sixth ahead of former team-mate Ash Sutton in his Subaru Levorg.

Chris Smiley’s FK8 Honda Civic came home eighth on the soft tyre, and has now been drawn onto reverse-grid pole for the third encounter.

Matt Simpson continued a strong weekend in ninth, while Jake Hill fended off race-long pressure from Tom Oliphant to round out the top ten.

Hill’s AmD Tuning stablemate Rory Butcher was 12th, while Bobby Thompson repeated his race one result in 13th.

Power Maxed Racing’s Rob Collard came home a respectable 14th despite running the less favourable harder compound rubber.

Josh Cook’s BTC Racing Honda Civic rounded out the points-paying positions.

The reverse-grid contest is scheduled to get underway at 17:30 BST.
