2020 BTCC calendar revealed with new Silverstone International meeting

A reshuffled calendar for the 2020 British Touring Car Championship has been announced, featuring a new order for the circuits as well as a first visit to the new Silverstone International layout.

Silverstone will feature twice on the 2020 calendar, with visits to both the traditional National layout as well as the new International configuration, which has not previously been used by the BTCC since the circuit was reconfigured in time for the 2010 season.

The season is set to begin at Donington Park on the 28 – 29 March, with the traditional curtain raiser no longer taking place on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit for the first time since 2010.

Brands Hatch will instead host the second round of the season two weeks later on 11 – 12 April, followed by spring visit to Silverstone on the National circuit two weeks’ later.

Thruxton retains its traditional mid-May slot as the fourth round of the year, ahead of Oulton Park four weeks’ later in mid-June.

Visits up north to both Croft and Knockhill will take place later in the year, with the two events scheduled to be run in August, with Croft on 15 – 16 August followed by Knockhill, brought forward by two weeks, on 29 – 30 August, just before the bank holiday weekend.

Silverstone will get a second round on 26 – 27 September, with the new International circuit hosting a BTCC round for the first time, before the season concludes on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix loop on 10 – 11 October.

“I’m pleased to confirm our calendar for the 2020 Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, which has a bit of a different feel to it for next season,” said BTCC Chief Executive, Alan Gow.

“As always, we take pride in confirming our schedule this early to allow the rest of British motorsport to plan theirs accordingly.”

Analysis

The changes to the 2020 BTCC calendar will be welcomed by many, with the changes mixing up the championship calendar and giving the series a fresh feel.

The biggest change is the addition of a second event at Silverstone on the International circuit, the first new layout to be introduced to the BTCC since Snetterton 300 in 2010.

The re-ordering of the circuits will also potentially change the championship formbook, as certain types of circuit tend to favour particular types of car.

The Silverstone National circuit with its three straights has traditionally been a circuit which favoured cars with plenty of grunt and having Thruxton two weeks after it will mean there are two top-speed circuits back-to-back.

Later in the year fans will get to see touring cars race around the new Silverstone Wing complex, throwing an unknown into the mix at a crucial point in the championship battle.

The last time a different Silverstone layout featured on the BTCC calendar was in 2004, when the championship raced on the old Silverstone International layout – an entirely different circuit to the current configuration.
