Esteban Guerrieri wins sedate race two at Zandvoort

Münnich Motorsport’s Esteban Guerrieri took his third win of the season in the second FIA World Touring Car Cup race at Zandvoort, finishing ahead of SLR duo Benjamin Leuchter and Johan Kristoffersson to extend his points lead.

Guerrieri started the race from the reverse grid pole and after getting a good start the Honda driver led for the entirety of the race, sustaining prolonged pressure from the Volkswagen of Leuchter to extend his championship advantage to 20 points.

Leuchter scored a first-ever WTCR podium in second, keeping the pressure on throughout the race whilst he was protected from behind by team-mate Kristoffersson, who also took a first podium in the series.

BRC’s Nicky Catsburg was the top Hyundai in fifth ahead of the CUPRA of PWR Racing’s Mikel Azcona, as the top five finished in the same order they started the race.

Augusto Farfus brought his BRC Hyundai home in sixth, the Brazilian benefitting when Lynk & Co’s Yvan Muller ran wide at the final corner on lap four and dropped four places.

Michelisz followed his BRC team-mate home in seventh, ahead of the best Lynk & Co of Yann Ehrlacher in eighth, whilst Muller took the flag in ninth.

Néstor Girolami completed the top ten, the Münnich Motorsport driver unable to make significant progress in a race which saw little overtaking action.

Rob Huff was the best Brit in 11th in his Volkswagen, taking his first points of the weekend after an engine change ahead of Saturday’s first race.

Lynk & Co’s Thed Björk was 12th after he suffered a loss of two places on the same lap that team-mate Muller dropped down the order.

The only retirement of the race was KCMG’s Attila Tassi, who was helped off the circuit by Comtoyou Racing’s Tom Coronel approaching Turn 6 on the opening lap. His Honda bounced off the barriers on the inside of the circuit before coming to a rest in the gravel, requiring a safety car phase from laps three to four.

Race three gets underway at 16:35 CEST (15:35 BST).
