Luca Engstler caps off title-winning weekend with victory in race two

Luca Engstler capped off his title-winning weekend by taking victory in the reverse-grid second TCR Malaysia race in Sepang, winning the race from fifth on the grid ahead of team-mate Mitchell Cheah.

Having already secured the inaugural title in Saturday’s first race of the weekend, Engstler was racing for glory in Sunday’s second race. The German, from the third row of the grid, charged into the lead at the start, passing pole-sitter Michael Choi into the first corner.

From there the Hyundai driver never looked back and he sprinted to a dominant 13-second win over Cheah.

Cheah himself had been sixth after the first sequence of turns, but the Malaysian was third by the end of the first lap after Paul Ip spun out ahead of him and Cheah was also able to pass Martin Ryba and Kai Jordan for position.

The 20-year-old then closed the gap to the Honda of Michael Choi, who had been running in second, to put pressure on the Hong Kong racer, before passing on lap four.

Choi held on to a podium finish in the closing laps, despite late pressure from Jordan and Ryba, who finished in formation in fourth and fifth respectively.

Malaysian local Mark Darwin brought his Engstler Motorsport Volkswagen home in sixth after the final half of the race went without incident or overtaking.

The final championship standings see Engstler win the title with 142.5 points, ahead of Jordan with 68, Ryba with 53 and Cheah with 48, despite the latter only contesting the final weekend of the three-event series.
