Mikel Azcona feeling ‘comfortable’ ahead of potential title decider

TCR Europe points leader Mikel Azcona is feeling ‘comfortable’ ahead of the penultimate race at Barcelona this afternoon [20th October], which could see him potentially crowned as Champion.

Third on the grid for the opening race behind KCMG pairing Attila Tassi and Josh Files – coupled with a disastrous qualifying for chief title rival Jean-Karl Vernay in 13th, mean a 4-point swing for the Spaniard will see him secure the honours on home turf with a round to spare.

That result came despite the CUPRA feeling worse for a few changes made ahead of the second part of qualifying, according to Azcona.

“It was a very good qualifying session,” summarised Azcona to TouringCars.net.

“I feel very good with the car, I feel comfortable with the car. In Q1, I had the best feeling with the car but then for Q2 we change a few things and it got a bit worse. So I am happy with P3 because we changed the rear tyres and this change hurt the car.”

He also believes that PCR Sport have the quickest package in race trim, but could elect to focus on just gaining enough points to get his championship hunt over the line in Race 1.

“I think I have the fastest car but we will have to see in the race. I think we will have some meetings to discuss the race but of course the goal is the championship.”

The opening race at the 2.8 mile Catalan circuit gets underway at 17:30 CEST.
