Andreas Bäckman unfazed by wet conditions at Donington Park

Andreas Bäckman is confident the WestCoast Racing’s Volkswagen Golf GTI will perform as competitively in torrentially wet conditions at today’s TCR UK Touring Car Championship finale at Donington Park.

Bäckman qualified second in a 1-2-3 for the Swedish equipe at the 1.97 mile National circuit, with team mate and championship leader Dan Lloyd on pole, and sibling Jessica behind.

The East Midlands venue is another new circuit for the TCR Scandinavia regular, but regardless he believes their performance in the warm-up session yesterday should translate to race pace.

“For me the wet weather isn’t much of a difference,” explained Bäckman to TouringCars.net.

“The track is new for me this weekend so I’m still learning, but I was good in the rain during the warm-up, so I think we’d still have a good race and have good speed in the wet. I think we’ve showed our car is working in both wet and dry.”

“It was a really hard session. I was second to begin with but everyone kept improving, I did the best I could and I’m really happy with my lap time. I got the maximum from it I could today and I’m happy, not just for myself, but also for the team with a 1-2-3 result.

“I don’t really have any pressure anymore because I don’t have anything to fight for in the standings, but tomorrow I’m going to just do my best and see how it is.”

The penultimate round of the inaugural TCR UK season gets underway at 13:15 BST.
