Audi’s Nico Müller was fastest in a damp final practice session for the DTM at the Red Bull Ring, placing his Audi on top of the times near the end of the session, almost half a second faster than Mercedes’ Edoardo Mortara.
Müller went to the top of the times with just over a minute remaining, initially with an effort of 1 minute 34.327 seconds before improving his time to 1:33.797. The times were faster than any of Saturday’s running, but continued to be almost ten seconds slower than those set in Friday’s dry running.
HWA’s Mortara was fourth quickest, having himself been quickest with just over five minutes to go and again improved near the end of the session as the track conditions got better.
Audi’s Robin Frijns, who had been fastest at the halfway stage, improved his time again to end up third quickest, ahead of Mercedes’ Gary Paffett in fourth.
Saturday podium finisher Mike Rockenfeller put his Audi in fifth, ahead of Mercedes’ Pascal Wehrlein in sixth.
Team Phoenix’s Loïc Duval was seventh, ahead of fellow Audi racer and race one winner René Rast in eighth.
The top ten was completed by Mercedes duo Paul di Resta and Lucas Auer, meaning that not a single BMW driver featured inside the top ten, the best placed Munich representative being Bruno Spengler down in 13th, over a second off the pace.
Qualifying for race two is scheduled to get underway at 10:35 CEST (09:35 BST).
