Gary Paffett and Pascal Wehrlein joint quickest in rain-hit free practice two

With heavy rain continuing to fall in the Rimini region, second practice for the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters saw points leader Gary Paffett take the top spot after 30 minutes, with Stuttgart stablemate Pascal Wehrlein setting the exact same lap time.

Paffett topped the session, as he set the lap time first, with the 2015 champion putting in his best effort shortly afterwards, with the best laps from all drivers being set in the last two minutes of the session.

Paul Di Resta was third quickest, a mere 0.019 seconds behind the pair, with Daniel Juncadella making it a clean sweep for Mercedes in the top four.

Marco Wittmann was the best of the BMW drivers in fifth, ahead of Timo Glock, whilst home hero Edoardo Mortara put his C63 AMG Coupé behind the Munich pair.

Despite bringing out the red flag just after the six minute mark, Holland’s Robin Frijns was able to rejoin the session to put his Audi RS5 DTM eighth fastest.

The Abt Sportsline driver went wide at turn four, before the rear of his car sent him spinning into the gravel. Nico Müller completed was ninth, as the Swiss driver’s best effort of a 1:47.125 put him 1.054 seconds off the pace set by Paffett.

Philipp Eng completed the top ten, ahead of BMW stablemate Augusto Farfus, but the Austrian driver was top of the times before Frijns brought out the red flag.

Loïc Duval, whose Audi stopped at the end of pit lane at the start of the session, was only able to manage the 12th fastest time, ahead of Lucas Auer, who was the slowest of the Mercedes contingent.

René Rast and Mike Rockenfeller had a difficult time in the adverse conditions, as the pair representing the Ingolstadt marque completed the top fifteen.

Bruno Spengler was sixteenth, ahead of Britain’s Jamie Green, whilst Alex Zanardi was 0.204 seconds ahead of Joel Eriksson around the 4.226-km circuit, as the Swede completed the finishing order for the session.

Qualfiying for the first ever DTM night race at Misano gets underway at 2000 CEST (BST + 1 hour), lasting for 20 minutes.
