Tom Chilton targeting victory in BTCC ‘diamond double’ race

Tom Chilton is aiming to take victory in this weekend’s coveted ‘diamond double’ race for the British Touring Car Championship at Snetterton, with the Motorbase Performance driver ‘excited’ by the weekend prospect.

Chilton heads to Norfolk currently fifth in the drivers’ championship standings, and he is one of only two drivers in the top ten yet to score a race victory.

The Ford driver heads to Snetterton in a confident mood, however, having taken second in the most recent race at Croft and been consistently near the top of the times in the recent two-day test held at the circuit earlier in the month.

The 33-year-old admits that he is targeting at least one victory at Snetterton this weekend – with the Reigate racer having last stood on the top step at the track in 2005 when he took a double win.

“I’m very excited about Snetterton this weekend,” said Chilton. “We have a very strong car. We completed around 1,000 km at the Dunlop test and collected a huge amount of data.

“We already had a great race car, but I think we have an even better car now heading into the double points race.”

Saturday will feature an additional qualifying session for Sunday’s main race, with both seeing the field run without any success ballast on board.

“The extra 15-minute qualifying session will be interesting to see how all of the cars compare against each other without the ballast on-board.

“I would love to get a win this weekend, it would be awesome. The ideal scenario would be to get a win in race two and then still be free of the weight for the final double points race.”
