Thed Björk converts pole into race three win at Nürburgring Nordschleife

Race three polesitter Thed Björk converted his second pole position of the weekend into a win ahead of Frédéric Vervisch in race three of the FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The Swede fended off pressure on the final lap from Vervisch, who almost got past his Hyundai i30 N TCR on the GP loop of the Nurburgring.

The pair made contact on the exit of the first chicane, and Björk was able to hold on for the win, while Vervisch scored his second podium of the weekend in his Comtoyou Racing Audi.

New championship leader Yvan Muller continued a successful weekend at the Nordschleife, with another podium in third position.

Muller was under increasing pressure from Yann Ehrlacher before the latter stopped out on track at the start of the final lap.

Race two winner Esteban Guerrieri finished fourth on track, but is classified in ninth position as he received a ten-second time penalty for a move on Norbert Michelisz at Aremberg on lap one.

Michelisz would not finish the three-lap thriller, as he attempted an ambitious move on a struggling Rob Huff at the Ex-Mühle section of the Nordschleife.

Huff was running strongly but reported a loss of power and was losing places hand over fist before he made contact with Michelisz and hit the barrier hard on the exit, putting both drivers out of the race.

Guerrieri’s penalty gave fourth position to Benjamin Lessennes, who made an impressive move on a slowing Rob Huff at the Flugplatz.

Next was Nathanäel Berthon, making it two Comtoyou Racing Audi’s in the top five.

Race two podium finisher Pepe Oriola scored another consistent points haul with sixth, ahead of Jean-Karl Vernay.

Another impressive finish was Medhi Bennani’s VW Golf GTI TCR, in front of Guerrieri with Tom Coronel finishing tenth after avoiding the spinning Michelisz on the final lap.
