Yvan Muller heads YMR 1-2 in second Hungaroring practice

A late effort from Yvan Muller saw the four-time WTCC champion end the second FIA World Touring Car Cup (WTCR) practice session with the best time, less than a tenth of a second ahead of team-mate Thed Björk.

Muller put in the fastest lap of the session in the closing seconds, with his time of 1 minute 52.707 seconds being enough to pip team-mate Björk.

Home favourite Norbert Michelisz was third making it a Hyundai 1-2-3, although his time from first practice remains as the fastest of the weekend thus far.

Münnich Motorsport’s Yann Ehrlacher was the leading Honda in fourth, ahead of Sébastien Loeb Racing’s Rob Huff in fifth, who was the leading Volkswagen driver just under half a second from the pace.

Wildcard Dániel Nagy was sixth in his M1RA Hyundai, ahead of the second Honda of James Thompson in sixth, with the Brit continuing to display encouraging pace.

Also continuing his form from first practice was DG Sport’s Aurélien Comte, who put his Peugeot in eighth, ahead of the second BRC Racing Hyundai of Gabriele Tarquini in ninth, who was the last driver within a second of the pace.

The weekend’s second wildcard entry, Attila Tassi, improved substantially on his first practice pace and was tenth, making it three Hungarians in the top ten.

Qualifying for Saturday’s first race takes place at 12:30 CEST (11:30 BST).

Team Mulsanne’s Gianni Morbidelli was 11^th, whilst team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi, who had an issue in the morning’s earlier session with the throttle pedal on his Alfa Romeo, also improved to end up in 18^th.

Numerous drivers were warned about exceeding track limits at Turn 4 and Turn 11 during the session, with Mehdi Bennani, Zsolt Szabó and John Filippi all being shown the black-and-white warning flag as a result.
