Norbert Michelisz continues to set the pace in Macau practice

Norbert Michelisz continued to set the pace in second practice for the World Touring Car Championship on the streets of Macau, as the Honda driver went over two seconds faster than Thursday’s times.

Having set the early pace in the session, Michelisz’s final effort saw him go almost 2.7 seconds faster than he had done in Thursday’s opening practice session to beat the Sébastien Loeb Racing Citroën of Mehdi Bennani to the top time by 0.333 seconds.

In the end none of the Citroën drivers got close to Michelisz’s effort, despite running the C-Elysée without compensation weight for the first-ever time. Michelisz’s Honda, 70 kg heavier, was on form in the session, smashing the Guia circuit lap record.

Rob Huff, who had been second quickest on Thursday, put his Münnich Motorsport Citroën in third, a further 0.033 seconds behind, with the second SLR Citroën of Tom Chilton in fourth.

Nicky Catsburg was the leading Volvo driver in fifth, over a second off the pace, ahead of team-mate and Guia circuit rookie Thed Björk in sixth.

There were troubles for the third Polestar Volvo though, as Néstor Girolami stopped on the track at Fisherman’s Bend with engine issues, which will need to be changed ahead of qualifying and will incur the Argentine a grid penalty for the Opening Race.

Esteban Guerrieri, once again replacing Tiago Monteiro in the third factory Honda, ended the session in seventh, ahead of the returning Ma Qing Hua in eighth in his SLR Citroën.

Honda’s Ryo Michigami and SLR’s John Filippi completed the top ten, with both drivers more than two seconds adrift of the ultimate pace.

Kin-Pong Clerebold Chan took no part in the session with the Hong Kong driver having withdrawn the second Campos Racing Chevrolet from the weekend due to illness.
