Josh Cook penalised for triggering race three crash

MG’s Josh Cook has been fined and hit with three penalty points on his licence for triggering the race three shunt with Jason Plato which also took out Stephen Jelley and Colin Turkington.

Cook made contact with the Subaru of Plato at Luffield in the opening laps of race three, spinning the Levorg across the circuit. The ensuing melee left several drivers with nowhere to go, resulting in Jelley and Turkington also being contacted.

Whilst Jelley and Plato were out on the spot, Turkington continued back to the pits for repairs but he re-joined the race a lap down and effectively out of the running.

Cook was adjudged by the stewards to have been to blame, and because it is his fifth strike of the season, he will start the opening race at Brands Hatch from the back of the grid. He was also fined £500.

Cook had earlier in the day been prevented from starting the first race due to receiving a one-race ban at Rockingham for notching up his then fourth strike.

Other drivers to be penalised at Silverstone were Brett Smith, who was fined £500 and given three penalty points for an incident involving Chris Smiley. Eurotech Racing are appealing the decision.

Ash Sutton was given a time penalty in race two for gaining an unfair advantage in passing Colin Turkington – he had to start race three from the back as it was his third strike.

Matt Simpson was officially reprimanded and given two penalty points for an incident involving Mat Jackson in race three, whilst Ant Whorton-Eales was officially reprimanded and given two penalty points for an incident involving Rob Austin in race one.
