Eurotech Racing’s Brett Smith set the pace in second practice for the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch, ahead of team-mate Jack Goff and Honda’s Gordon Shedden.
The early pace was set by Goff in the bright Brands sunshine, with the Honda Civic driver putting in a time of 1 minute 32.048 seconds after nine minutes to be the first of the front-wheel drive cars to go to the top of the times.
Goff then exchanged the top times with Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram, before he emerged as the quickest driver until three minutes from the end, when Smith rose initially to second before pipping his team-mate to the top time.
Goff ended up just over a tenth behind his team-mate, whilst third-placed Shedden was 0.242 seconds off the pace.
Adam Morgan, who set the pace in first practice, was fourth quickest in his Ciceley Motorsport Mercedes, ahead of Ingram in fifth, who ended up exactly three tenths off the pace.
BTC Norlin Racing’s Dave Newsham cracked the top ten for the second session in succession and was sixth, ahead of Team HARD’s Jake Hill in seventh, who was in the top ten throughout the 40-minute session.
Championship leader Ash Sutton was eighth, 0.388 seconds off the pace, directly ahead of team-mate Jason Plato in ninth. Motorbase’s Rory Butcher completed the top ten as the leading Ford driver.
It was a slightly more challenging session for Team BMW second time around, as title hopeful Colin Turkington ended up in 18th position, over seven tenths off the pace. Perennial one-lap pace struggler Rob Collard fared even worse, managing just 24th and over a second off the pace.
Qualifying is scheduled to take place at 15:05 BST.
