Andrew Jordan wins opening Oulton race as Tom Ingram hits trouble

Andrew Jordan led home Matt Neal in the opening British Touring Car Championship race of the day at Oulton Park, as championship leader Tom Ingram retired from the race with a damaged car.

At the start of the race it was Jordan, from second on the grid, who got off to the stronger start in his rear-wheel drive BMW, beating pole-sitter Neal into Turn 1.

Further back, contact at the Hislops chicane between Eurotech Racing’s Jack Goff and Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram turned the latter around, dropping him from the fringes of the top ten to the very back of the pack.

There were also troubles for Ciceley Motorsport’s Adam Morgan, who had to take avoiding action at the Island Hairpin when Stephen Jelley pushed Ant Whorton-Eales into his path, the incident dropping Morgan to the back of the pack.

As Jordan and Neal scampered away at the front, opening up a lead of more than ten seconds, it was initially Team BMW’s Colin Turkington who used his rear-wheel drive advantage to slot into the final podium position.

However, on lap two Laser Tools Racing’s Aiden Moffat took the position at the Island hairpin, as the Subaru of Ash Sutton closed in on the scrapping duo.

On lap seven Sutton got past Turkington for fourth, and three laps later the Subaru driver was pushed onto the grass on the exit of the corner as he also tried to pass Moffat.

That dropped Sutton briefly back to fifth, but by the end of the lap he was back in third, after a daring move around the outside of Moffat at Lodge Corner and into Turn 1 on the following lap.

In the end, Sutton held on to third thereafter, ahead of Moffat and Team BMW’s Rob Collard in fifth. Turkington made contact with the back of Moffat with just three laps to go and the Northern Irishman then dropped down the order with problems on his car, eventually finishing down in 29th place.

Motorbase Performance’s Mat Jackson took sixth, ahead of the second factory Honda of Gordon Shedden in seventh and Maximum Motorsport’s Josh Cook in eighth.

Completing the top ten were Handy Motorsport’s Rob Austin and Team HARD’s Jake Hill, the duo having been scrapping hard in the closing laps.

Jason Plato took his second points finish of the season with 12th and therefore doubled his points tally.

After the lap one contact with Goff, Ingram had struggled to recover and was in 29th position when on lap 13 the right-rear suspension on his Toyota gave in, likely as a result of the contact from Goff at the start of the race.

Ingram’s retirement means his points lead is slashed to just eight points ahead of Shedden, whilst Collard moves into third overall in the standings on 114 points.

The second race of the day takes place at 14:52 BST.
